A federal contractor COVID-19 vaccine mandate is on hold for now following a ruling from a federal court judge in Georgia.The temporary injunction from U.S. District Judge R. Stan Baker stops enforcement of the mandate nationwide and is another legal setback for efforts from President Joe Biden’s administration to implement widespread COVID-19 vaccine requirements.Representatives from Kansas, Georgia, Alabama, Indiana, South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia filed a lawsuit challenging whether a federal contractor COVID-19 vaccine mandate is constitutional. This injunction followed a narrower ruling in November that blocked the federal contractor vaccine mandate in Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee, according to a report in The Hill.Legal experts expect the federal government to appeal the injunction, although there is no indication of when that would happen.Federal contractors had been facing a January 18, 2022 deadline to be fully vaccinated to comply with Biden’s executive order, which was issued in September.A federal appeals court also has blocked a mandate pertaining to employers with 100 or more people that would require employees of those organizations to receive a COVID-19 vaccination or be tested weekly.Guidance surrounding vaccine mandates continues to evolve.
