A Day in the Life of Syndeo’s HR Business Partners

September 2, 2024

Check out this sneak peek behind the scenes at how our service allows clients to strive for greatness.

We love what we do, and nothing brings us more pride than knowing our clients feel relieved, supported, and encouraged by the help we provide. If you've ever navigated an HR issue without backup, you understand how overwhelming managing conflict, employee concerns, and compliance can be. While managing human resources across multiple companies presents challenges, we thrive on the fact that every day is unique.

When you partner with Syndeo, we aim to make the experience feel effortless for you. Behind the scenes, our Human Resource Business Partners (HRBPs) work tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly. This post explores what HRBPs do for our clients, what motivates them, and how they know they have done good work.

Let’s start with the basics.

1. What is an HR Business Partner?

The HRBP is the main point of contact for each client to Syndeo. This go-to partner serves as a liaison between your company and the different Syndeo departments and services. They will be your biggest cheerleader and resource in managing the human capital in your business.

2. What are the HRBPs’ key responsibilities?

HRBPs support the entire employee life cycle. Their key responsibilities are guiding business leaders in areas such as employee relations, performance management, policy development, employment law, compliance, and risk mitigation. They work closely with each client to meet all employment laws and regulations. They offer strategic HR advice, help manage client talent, and tackle any employee relations issues that arise. HRBPs also assist with HR policy creation, provide training, and data analysis. Additionally, HRBPs support our clients navigate any changes they’re going through and make sure their HR strategies fit their business goals.

3. Describe an HRBP typical day — first tasks in the morning to finishing the day.

For some Syndeo HRBPs, coffee is first! But after coffee, is checking emails and communications to prioritize what needs to be completed that day. Team huddles several times a week connect the entire team, help set priorities for each day, and offer synergistic assistance to anyone who may need it.

HRBPs calendars often include employee benefit or orientation meetings, meetings with clients to discuss employee relations issues or policy development, or scheduled training sessions. Team meetings ensure alignment on projects and address any challenges.

Throughout the day, they focus on addressing client needs, such as discussing HR strategies, handling employee issues, or providing guidance on various issues.

Each HRBP must also allocate time for administrative tasks, like updating records or preparing reports. Many of our HRBPs use to-do lists and apps to stay on top of everything.

4. What keeps Syndeo HRBPs motivated to go to work every day?

This answer obviously varies depending on whom you ask. One HRBP says, “My clients need me. The role I fill as a partner is vitally important to removing the obstacles and disruptions that poor employee relations can cause. I particularly love being able to handle situations in a manner that causes the least disruptions possible and ultimately allows my clients to get back to what they do best as quickly as possible.”

Another says, “It’s the wins. I love knowing that the work I do helps create a better work environment, supports employees in their careers, and contributes to the overall success of the organization.”

5. What skills make HRBPs the most effective?

Our HRBPs are master communicators and problem-solvers. Syndeo has a variety of clients in various industries and putting on many different hats to communicate effectively and provide the best support is a big part of what we do.

Another often overlooked skill, public speaking, is paramount to their work. Our HRBPs provide company-wide training, whether for just leadership or all employees, and they lead onboarding and benefit meetings for large groups. Every HRBP at Syndeo is well-versed in speaking in front of crowds!

6. What challenges do HRBPs face?

One of the biggest challenges in this role is managing the various scenarios that come at the HRBPs daily—often all at once. Due to the unpredictable nature of employment relations issues, resolving issues in a way that leads to positive outcomes for both clients and their employees is especially important. To prioritize effectively, our HRBPs carefully assess the urgency and impact of every task. This approach allows them to focus on each challenge individually, ensuring the best possible resolution every time.

7. How do we know we’ve done a good job?

When we perform at our very best, our clients let us know! One HRBP said, “The best feedback I’ve received from a client was hearing how my support and guidance has made them feel that they are not alone in their leadership role and that they can always discuss their challenges openly when needed.” When we hear “We’d be lost without you!”, we take it to be the biggest compliment. It means the effort we’ve invested in the relationship to build trust is fruitful for both sides.

One HRBP shared, “A significant moment in my time at Syndeo was assisting a client transition to a hybrid/remote work schedule for their employees. This significant change for their organization — navigating schedules, business needs, and performance management pieces — required collaboration, trust, and a thorough understanding of all the HR aspects. Seeing the successful transition and employee feedback that the change improved productivity, work-life balance, and culture was rewarding.”

We’re hard at work for you.

A lesson learned by many Syndeo employees, one HRBP shared, “I realized a long time ago that most people simply want to feel heard, whether they are employees, managers, or owners. Often, if we take the time to genuinely listen to someone, many situations can be de-escalated and resolved more effectively. Providing a space where people feel understood and valued can lead to better communication, more constructive problem-solving, and a more positive work environment overall.”

Our approach goes beyond solving immediate issues; it cultivates trust and strengthens relationships throughout the organization. Over our 20 years in business, we've learned that nothing is more valuable than relationships founded on trust and proven over time. That's why we define success in this role by our ability to collaborate, leverage resources, and build connections with others who share a common goal.

Even with its challenges, our work is fulfilling. Solving problems and simplifying your life is what makes our work easy to love.
