Cuy Mauck knows how hard aspects of the service industry have been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He wants to help and is encouraging others to do the same.
So Mauck, who is the president and CEO of Chisholm Trail State Bank, is challenging business leaders and others who are able to leave a 50-percent tip over 50 days for restaurant servers, hair stylists, barbers and other service providers who have been adversely affected by restrictions put in place to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
“This is a chance for us (you) to give back,” Mauck says in the challenge video. “I’m challenging you to give back because there are people out there who need our help.”
Mauck is spearheading the “50/50 Tip Challenge” with the help of RSM Marketing. Syndeo provides outsourced human resource services for Chisholm Trail and RSM.
The premise is simple. Spend $60 at a restaurant, leave a $30 tip if you are able. Say your favorite stylist charges $100 for a cut and color, add $50 for a tip.
But those involved say this challenge shouldn’t just apply to larger tickets.
Spend $4 on coffee at your favorite local coffee shop, leave a $2 tip.
Every amount can help those service providers whose business has been shut down completely or operating in a limited capacity during the Kansas stay-at-home order.
Mauck says the idea for the 50/50 Tip Challenge stems from a recent conversation he had with his barber about his struggles being unable to work due to nonessential businesses being shut down. Barber shops and salons are among the businesses not being allowed to reopen until at least May 18 under Gov. Laura Kelly’s plan for reopening the state.
“These are the people who are hurting,” Mauck says.
The goal is for the 50/50 Tip Challenge to grow into a national initiative. Mauck hopes RSM’s involvement with national industry groups will aid that effort.
Additionally, the launch of the campaign recently garnered attention from the Wichita Business Journal.
The 50-day period would end around the Fourth of July.
“It’s about getting the country back (up and running),” Mauck says.
